Imereti

Imereti is one of the most historically rich and naturally diverse regions of western Georgia. Located in the central-western part of the country, it is known for its fertile valleys, ancient cities, impressive caves, and warm hospitality. The region has played a key role in Georgian history for thousands of years and is considered one of the cultural hearts of the nation.

The capital of Imereti is Kutaisi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and a former capital of the ancient Kingdom of Colchis. Kutaisi is home to important UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery, which reflect the region’s medieval spiritual and architectural heritage.

Imereti is famous for its unique karst landscapes and caves, including Prometheus Cave, Sataplia Cave, and Tskaltubo caves, featuring stunning stalactites, underground rivers, and impressive natural halls. The region also offers beautiful canyons like Martvili Canyon and Okatse Canyon, with panoramic views, waterfalls, and suspended walkways.

The region’s climate is mild and humid, making it ideal for vineyards, agriculture, and lush green landscapes. Imereti is known for its traditional cuisine, including dishes such as Imeretian khachapuri, fresh herbs, and local wines made using traditional Georgian methods.

With a combination of history, nature, gastronomy, and wellness tourism (especially in Tskaltubo’s historic spa resorts), Imereti is an excellent destination for cultural tours, eco-tourism, family travel, and adventure experiences.
